Special interview today, you guys:) Jessica Couch is a friend and fellow designer whom I’ve respected and looked up to since I met her several years ago. She encouraged me to attend the College of Textiles at NCSU, and has since helped me with the hair and styling of my past couple of fashion shows. She’s a multi-talented force that is just beginning to make her mark on the industry, which is why I’m so happy and excited for her new online boutique, Luxor + Finch.
What inspired you to start a boutique of your own?
I love fashion and I was raised in a household where I was taught the importance of ownership and having your own. My parents are lawyers, but they run their own business. Much of my life was spent observing and assisting in the family business. Although I didn’t go down the law route, I did absorb the entrepreneurial spirit. Having a boutique gave me a way to build my dream and a place to put my own products (coming in April/May). Also, I have so many talented friends that I wanted to have a place where they could have their products as well.
What’s the meaning behind the name Luxor + Finch?
I was blessed to take a study abroad trip to Egypt during undergrad. I’d been dying to go to Egypt since I was in the 4th grade, and my teacher, Mrs. Rita Davis, emerged us for the whole year in Egyptian culture. While I was there, I visited the city of Luxor where much of the ruins of massive temples and palaces can still be seen. It was also home to the Nubian civilization that inhabited Egypt. Finch came from me seeing myself as a free spirit. I believe a bird is the best way to symbolize that. Combined, it pays homage to our roots and it reminds us to fly. Two names just felt appropriate since I’m a Gemini and I like two of everything.
What is an item on your site you feel every woman should own?
Right now, every woman should own a rock out pair of leggings. Only because they make every
person who wears them feel like a rock star and all women need to, a some point in their day, feel like a rock star! Now, this summer and fall I will be introducing more merchandise and I don’t want to leak info, but I promise every woman will want at least one of these top-secret garments!
Are you currently looking for more vendors to sell their products on your site?
Yes, I want to feature more independent designers of all kinds. I want people to know that Luxor and Finch is for them as well! I don’t view it so much as competition, but as cross promotion that strengthens the brand. So if anyone is interested in having his or her products on the site, PLEASE
don’t hesitate to email me email@example.com!!!
Hopefully you will get us some pieces to sell as well!!
What is your ultimate vision for Luxor + Finch?
My ultimate vision for L+F is to take it internationally as a style guide and online/brick and mortar store that offers the best fitting wardrobe essentials. I hope that as it grows it evolves into its own thing. I treat it like my child, so I have a vision for it but I have a feeling it will create its own. My dreams for L+F go on and on!!!!
Any upcoming events we should know about?
Yes! We will be planning a relaunch in May and it’s going to be awesome! I want people to stay posted because although were in NYC now, we will still be collaborating to have more events in NC. Right now we’re getting adjusted to the city, but once we get things right we’ll have much more up on the site. And if you missed our last event, you missed out!! We’re only going get better!
Well wishes to Jessica and all of her endeavors! Hopefully we’ll collaborate one day!
