4th of July Style Picks

4th of July 2014
Still trying to figure out what to wear for this weekend’s festivities? Above are 3 not-so-cliché looks that incorporate current summer trends! Whether you’re going to a cookout, spending an evening downtown to see fireworks, or attending a holiday soirée, I’ve got you covered!
1. Chic meets distressed with a modern cropped tank and all-American ripped denim. Take it up a notch with a sleek bun, a red lip and cobalt blue chandelier earrings. Tapered at the bottom, these boyfriend jeans will allow your red strappy heels to pop even more, then shake it up with an all white, big-faced Nixon watch.
2. Go sporty with this detailed mini and pair it with a printed navy tank. Simply throw on some hoops, a convertible red clutch, and navy pumps and you’re ready to go to that rooftop party.
3. I love this silk printed Ferina pant by Joie for a cool, boho-chic look! A dainty red tank works well to complete your holiday ‘fit with gold bangles, hoops and an off-white crossbody to match your midi sandals.
Happy 4th!

Spring 2014 Trends: Overalls
Are overalls the new comeback? It seems so! Above are a couple of suggestions on how to dress them up or down with our fave type of heel or sandal. Cuff ’em, distress em, or pair them with a crop top – overalls are this season’s throwback must-have!
Pictured below are how some of the most chic celebs have styled them. I love every look!

What to Wear with White Denim

pink paradise

Here’s a fresh idea on how to pair your trendy white denim for the spring! Keep it soft and subtle with a pastel cropped sweater and nude strappy sandals for a day out and about.

What to Wear to a Spring Brunch

romantic rose
As the weather starts warming up, in come the pastels and florals! It’s time to shake off those winter layers and shop new spring trends (see previous post). This look is perfect for an afternoon brunch on a warm day after church or a business meeting. I’m loving the detail on the hem of the skirt and the multicolored watercolor print on the blouse. The neutral accessories allow the blouse to pop and make its own statement. Cute, right?

Spring 2014 Must Haves

Spring 2014 Must Haves
1. Sheer is here to stay! Tasteful peek-a-boo detailing is refreshed with sweet versus sporty styling.
2. Floral is forever a spring/summer wardrobe staple. I suggest playing with untraditional floral prints like digital and more graphic florals, as well as abstract florals.
3. Fringe accessories, fringe outerwear, fringe statement pieces galore! Add some interest to your look with this fun and edgy element.
4. Graphic, contrasting black and white prints are classic, but even more popular this season. These types of prints are all about making a bold statement.
5. White, wide-leg pants were seen on all the runways for this season! Look fresh in a linen or cotton pair, and finish off your look with chunky wedges or strappy sandals.
6. If you hadn’t noticed, embellishment was pretty big this past holiday season. This trend will be carried on into the spring, featured on all different types of fabrics and garments.
Happy Shopping!

Graduate Reflections

The day has come! It’s somewhat surreal and bittersweet, but overall joyous! My college days are over, and I wanted to take some time to reflect on my lessons learned and greatest triumphs.

Michelle Obama once said,

“Don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have, because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”

I remember participating in my very first fashion show in the College of Textiles…the nerves and unease of everyone seeing what I had designed and wondering if things would actually come together as I’d envisioned them to. It was my debut and I wanted everything to be perfect.

It wasn’t until the day of that I realized what I had flung myself into; I wasn’t a great seamstress and I’d never made a collection before. I remember my mom asking me if I was even ready to take that step.  I wasn’t sure myself.

But despite the feelings of doubt, I possessed a passion, a determination and most importantly, a team of enthusiastic, dedicated, and diligent friends, family, and faculty that backed my desire to succeed.  Inspired by student designers that came before me that worked zealously to make their vision come alive, I believed that I could do the same.  My courage was fueled by those surrounding me, pushing me to be and do my best.

Courage is indeed contagious. I’ve learned that in order to truly grow and  progress in life I need to:

1. Be a leader.

2. Be a learner.

3. Be a light.

It takes courage to be a leader in your field. This kind of courage was displayed every day by my professors at COT that provided their own knowledge and experience about a myriad of topics, from the chemistry that goes into creating polymers and the technology that goes into weaving or knitting, to the marketing savvy needed to build a brand.1501786_10151946789564864_858757709_nMy fave professor ever, Dr. Hoon Joo Lee:)

It requires courage to be a learner. To go new places and open your mind to new ideas. Learn and collaborate with people of disciplines different from your own and don’t restrict yourself to the norm or what you may think is expected of you. Learning is a lifelong process, and although I’m just now graduating, my learning process has only begun.

IMG_2273I love my friends SO much…

Let your courage enable you to be a light for others. Light the path for those succeeding you. Blaze a trail. Allow your life to be a testament to the courage required to exceed your wildest dreams.

Though this part of my journey in life is up, I am so looking forward to all that is in store for my future.

In whatever walk of life you choose to pursue, I challenge you all to let your courage be contagious.

9 Men’s Staples for this Fall

Looking to mix up your wardrobe a bit, guys? Fall fashion fun isn’t only for girls! Here are some examples of cool fall essentials every man should own:

SHIRTS

1.plaid

Both from J.Crew.com

Classic, comfortable, and they look great with almost everything. If you don’t own at least two, I suggest you invest!

2.chambray

Both from J.Crew.com

Chambray is still in and here to stay. Chambray on denim combos, chambray on khaki, chambray under a blazer or motorcycle jacket…endless opportunities for effortless cool. And the elbow patches are a plus this season, too.

OUTERWEAR

3.jackets

Both from Topman.com

Baseball jackets seem to make shoulders appear broader. These are good for day and night wear as an alternative for a regular hoodie. Get one of these to add a little something to a simple v-neck & jeans look.

4.coatsBoth from Topman.com

A man in a nice peacoat commands respect. It says sophisticated and classy without you saying a word. Go with a longer belted wool peacoat for colder days, or a simple black one to go over a dressier outfit. Gentlemen, these [with the right fit, of course] are flattering on most body types because it gives you added structure. Get one!

FOOTWORK

5.boots

A slip-on Chelsea boot like the one on the left is good for pairing with denim or a suit. The Red Wing boots on the right can add a bit of a rugged flair to that plaid or chambray shirt aforementioned!

6.sneakersI love monochromatic kicks. Both of these stand out to me and both pairs would look dope with skinny jeans and a graphic tee. Or a button up. Or a almost anything else.

ACCESSORIES

7.caps

Both from J.Crew.com

Baseball caps over fitteds, any day. I just hate the way fitteds look to be honest, and I think baseball caps are SO much cooler. Don’t believe me, ask Frankie Beverly. Haha, but really. You don’t have to follow baseball to pull one of these off.

8.watchesChronographic – because the more numbers, the better. All black is sleek and edgy, and bold color is great for casual daytime outfits.

9.socks

Both from J.Crew.com

A wise man once told me that socks can make or break your look. If you’re conservative everywhere else, give us a pop of color in your socks paired with a mid-rise boot or loafer.

Happy Fall:)
